WHAT WE DO

Consulting Engineer specialising in building services engineering for commercial, industrial and community buildings.

Mclean Consulting has provided professional building services engineering design and construction management services to architects, designers and building owners on the Kapiti Coast for more than 20 years.

The practice generally focuses on small to medium-size projects, ensuring we can remain agile and responsive in fast-moving environments.  All drawings and documentation are produced in-house using the latest CAD draughting packages.

We generally do not provide services for residential dwellings and smaller multi-unit residential projects. These smaller projects rarely require fire reports or engineering design of the services and can normally be handled under the Licensed Building Practitioner regime.

OUR AREA

McLean Consulting provides service to clients and building projects in the Porirua, Kapiti Coast and Horowhenua regions.

We are happy to quote for projects outside of these regions, although providing the close level of service and attention that we believe our clients deserve can be problematic on more remote construction sites.
However, we often provide on-the-ground construction monitoring services for local projects which have been designed by consultants outside the region who do not have a local presence.

OUR METHOD

McLean Consulting can provide documentation for building services trades for inclusion in architectural tender packages, or complete contract documentation, tendering and contract management.

DESIGN

All project design and draughting is carried out in-house using modern computerised design packages for load calculation, modelling and simulation and the latest CAD draughting software.

CONTRACTUAL

Most clients recognise the benefits of tendering to fully specified documents so that consistent pricing and clear quality and performance standards are established. This is sometimes not necessary if client already has a relationship with a trusted contractor of if project time constraints preclude a proper tendering process.

CONSTRUCTION MONITORING

On more complicated projects we recommend engagements include construction monitoring to ACENZ/IPENZ Level CM2 or better. This provides flexibility for continued design input during the construction phase, and allows us to verify that construction work meets consent requirements if Councils ask for this.

PRINCIPAL

Dave is a professional mechanical engineer with more than 30 years experience in building services engineering both in New Zealand and internationally. He formed the McLean Consulting practice in 1997 and has been principal since its formation. Dave and his family live close to the business at Paraparaumu Beach. His spare time interests include ocean sailing and fast cars.

OUR PRICE GUIDE

Although we price projects on a case by case basis, this is a guide to the services and project packages we offer to our clients.

BUILDING SERVICES ENGINEERING

For smaller projects with well a defined work scope we can normally offer lump sum fees.  On larger projects with less certain scope of works it is usually more appropriate to offer fees based on a percentage of the value of the building services work.

FIRE COMPLIANCE REPORTS

Fees are normally quoted on an hourly rate basis up to an agreed maximum.  The cost can vary considerably depending on the nature of the proposed work, particularly for existing buildings where there are no records or up-to-date floor plans.  Fees can range from under $500 for simpler projects up to several thousand for more complicated ones.  Costs can be significantly reduced if McLean Consulting is also providing building services engineering work for the project.

H1 ENERGY ANALYSIS

Fees are normally quoted on an hourly rate basis up to an agreed maximum.  If we are also doing building thermal modelling as part of the HVAC design the same building model can be used for H1 energy analysis with a very considerable cost saving.
